GOTG 3 VFX Production Supervisor Discusses Perfect Harmony with James Gunn

Stephane Ceretti, the visual effects production supervisor for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, recently shared some fascinating insights into his collaboration with director James Gunn.

What did Stephane Ceretti say working with James Gunn was like?

In an interview with ComingSoon, Ceretti expressed his admiration for Gunn and revealed that the director would often make jokes about his experience with visual effects from working on the 2002 live-action Scooby-Doo movie.

“Well, he was already very savvy on the first one, in terms of visual effects, because he had done … he always tells me, ‘I’ve done Scooby-Doo, so I know how that works.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, yeah, of course.’ But he does! I mean, he’s really good,” Ceretti explained. “We have a close working relationship throughout the shoot. I sit right behind him, and we constantly communicate. With so many visual effects involved, it’s crucial for us to be in sync. Returning after almost 10 years, I could see how much the process had evolved in terms of shooting with the actors and the way James handles the camera. It’s faster, more organic, and dynamic.”

“But it’s not just the technical aspects,” Ceretti continued. “James also excels at interacting with the actors during takes. He provides suggestions efficiently and knows exactly what he wants. He storyboards every shot in the film and has a deep understanding of previs. He’s very specific about what he needs from it. As a filmmaker, he’s become even more comfortable on set. Everything runs smoothly, thanks to our well-coordinated team. It’s like a well-oiled machine.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was once again written and directed by James Gunn. The film brought back beloved MCU veterans such as Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Sean Gunn, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel reprising their iconic roles. Additionally, Maria Bakalova returned as Cosmo the Spacedog, while newcomers Will Poulter and Chukwudi Iwuji joined the franchise as Adam Warlock and High Evolutionary, respectively.
