Startup Aims to Achieve Permanent Human Presence Undersea by the End of the Decade

Imagine a world where scientists can explore the depths of the ocean for extended periods of time, unlocking its mysteries and preserving its delicate ecosystem. That’s the vision of DEEP, a company dedicated to understanding and protecting our oceans.

According to Steve Etherton, President of DEEP’s arm in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, “The oceans sit at the centre of many of the generational challenges the world is facing, and they also offer opportunities we have not even begun to comprehend. They are the source of at least every other breath we take. They influence the weather. They influence the climate. They influence us.”

DEEP’s flagship project is the Sentinel underwater habitat, a customizable station that provides living spaces, communal areas, and research labs for scientists studying the underwater environment. With innovative technology and renewable power, these modules will enable scientists to operate at depth for extended periods of time.

But DEEP’s ambitions don’t stop there. They’re also developing a large-scale bioreactor that can treat all waste without the need for regular tank emptying. And the best part? These Sentinel units have a service life of 20 years and can be redeployed to different locations across the world.

DEEP is already making waves in the real world. They’re transforming a flooded quarry in the UK into a state-of-the-art water facility for training, testing, and research. This commitment to action shows that DEEP is serious about their plans and the future of ocean exploration.

Sean Wolpert, President of the Americas at DEEP, emphasizes the importance of preserving and husbanding the oceans for the benefit of humanity. He sees endless opportunities in the emerging ocean/blue economy, from pharmaceutical research to carbon capture to innovative medicines. It’s about cooperation and working with the oceans for generations to come.
