Get ready for some behind-the-scenes scoop! A new book reveals that Parks and Recreation had to make a tough decision involving the one and only Chris Pratt. Why? Well, it turns out his intense workout routine for Guardians of the Galaxy caused a scene to be cut from the show.
Vanity Fair recently shared an excerpt from the book MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, which spills the beans on Pratt’s casting as Star-Lord. We all know him as the lovable Andy Dwyer, but Pratt had to undergo a rigorous diet and exercise program to transform into the superhero. Unfortunately, his new chiseled physique didn’t quite fit with a planned shirtless scene in Parks and Rec season 7.
Showrunner Michael Schur explained, “We realized we couldn’t do it. Andy is not a guy who has a perfectly constructed human form with ripped abs and gigantic biceps.”
How Chris Pratt Became Star-Lord
Here’s the inside scoop on Pratt’s incredible transformation. Initially, Pratt had gained weight for his role as Andy Dwyer to appear more “schlubby.” This meant he had to put in extra effort to prepare for Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel Studios brought in Duffy Gaver, the same trainer who had worked with Chris Hemsworth on Thor, to help Pratt. And so, a six-month exercise regimen began to turn Pratt into a true superhero.
Gaver had nothing but praise for Pratt and the other actors he worked with. He emphasized that Marvel looks for dedicated and disciplined individuals who are committed to their craft and physical perfection. “The people I get called to train have already passed quite a litmus test to arrive where they are,” Gaver stated.
Marvel also enlisted the help of nutritionist Philip Goglia, who designed a special diet for Pratt. Under Goglia’s supervision, Pratt consumed a whopping 4,000 calories a day and drank plenty of water. Pratt jokingly recalled, “I was peeing all day long, every day. That part was a nightmare.”
All the hard work paid off, though, as Pratt got into tip-top shape just in time for filming Guardians of the Galaxy.
