Todd McFarlane discusses Spawn’s Call of Duty crossover, highlighting its inherent military element

The world of Call of Duty has been shaken up with the arrival of Spawn in Modern Warfare II’s sixth season of content. And according to creator Todd McFarlane, the integration of the iconic comic book character has been seamless.

What did Todd McFarlane say?

In an interview with ComingSoon, McFarlane discussed the highly anticipated crossover and highlighted that Spawn, known as Al Simmons, was not only a popular comic book character but also a former military member.

“Let’s talk about the character himself,” McFarlane explained. “Underneath the mask and the costume is a guy named Al Simmons, or more specifically, Lieutenant Colonel Al Simmons. So, from the very beginning, military presence has been a part of this character’s mythology. This, along with his 30-year popularity in the comic book world, makes him a natural fit for integration into the Call of Duty game. It’s much easier and seamless compared to introducing other licensed products.”

McFarlane also revealed that the team behind Modern Warfare II and himself wanted to showcase different iterations of Spawn, ensuring they fit within the game’s universe.

“During our discussions with the development team, we focused on more than just having Spawn or Spawn with big guns,” McFarlane shared. “There are various iterations of Spawn in the comic books and toys, such as Commando Spawn in his Desert Storm attire. We also have Al Simmons himself before he became Spawn, a badass military man who served in Special Ops. So, it’s not just the original Spawn, but a collection of different looks and characters, including Call of Duty characters with Spawn-inspired ‘cosplay paint jobs’.”
