Todd McFarlane Advises Actors Portraying Spawn

Prepare to be blown away by actor Keith David’s unforgettable portrayal of Lieutenant Colonel Al Simmons/Spawn in the 1997 HBO animated series. Creator Todd McFarlane himself admits that David’s performance was so incredible, it’s hard for him to imagine anyone else in the role.

In an interview with ComingSoon, McFarlane couldn’t help but sing David’s praises, revealing that he still hears Spawn’s voice whenever he watches David in other projects.

“Keith’s version was just so mind-blowingly good that I can’t hear anyone else’s voice,” McFarlane confessed. “Even when he’s playing a different character or appearing in another movie, I catch myself thinking, ‘Oh, it’s Spawn!’ before reminding myself that it’s actually Keith David. I guess I’ve sort of merged Keith David’s persona with Spawn’s. But if you’re a fan of Keith David’s voice, you’re in for a treat with what’s happening in Call of Duty.”

Spawn doesn’t joke around

When it comes to other actors taking on the role of this iconic comic book character, McFarlane has some valuable advice. He emphasizes the importance of capturing Spawn’s serious nature and minimal sense of humor.

“It’s crucial to remember that he’s not the type to crack jokes,” McFarlane explained. “He’s deadly serious, with a touch of that Outlaw Josey Wales attitude. You know, the strong, silent type who lets his actions speak louder than words. He’s a true gunslinger, a total badass. Personally, I’ve always been drawn to these rough-around-the-edges characters, the rebellious ones who don’t conform to Superman’s polite and perfect ways. I believe that’s part of Spawn’s charm for many people.”
