Neil Gaiman to Pen Good Omens 3 Despite Pending Renewal

When it comes to the possibility of a third season of Good Omens, Neil Gaiman himself is the ultimate optimist. In August, he boldly declared that if Prime Video didn’t renew the series, he would write a sequel as a novel. But now, with the writers’ strike resolved, he’s back to writing the series, even though it hasn’t officially been renewed.

Yesterday, a curious fan on Bluesky asked Gaiman if he’d be working on the scripts again now that the strike is over. His one-word response was a resounding “Yes.” Another hopeful fan inquired about the show’s renewal for a third season, to which Gaiman replied, “No. But I’ve been hired to write one.” Interpret that as you wish.

Gaiman has shared some intriguing details about the writing process for the highly anticipated third season on Tumblr. He wrote,

If it wasn’t for strikes, I’d have most of it written by now. As it is, a first draft of Episode 1 and the final fifteen pages of Episode 6 (in case I get hit by a bus) are written, and the rest of it has to wait until the strike is done and we can pick up our pens.

He also mentioned that if the series does get renewed, it’s likely that it won’t hit screens until 2026 due to the time it takes for production and release. (Plus, the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike means nothing is shooting until that situation is resolved.)

If fans are feeling exceptionally hopeful for the show’s third season, there’s a good reason for it: maybe, just maybe, it’s something akin to the sequel that Gaiman and Good Omens co-author Terry Pratchett conceived way back in 1989. Gaiman told Metro that the second season of the show, “is not that sequel, which is huge and apocalyptic like the first one was huge and apocalyptic. This one is the smaller, not terribly apocalyptic filling to get us from one to the other.”

Not terribly apocalyptic, perhaps, but still incredibly meaningful for fans. And if that was the “filling,” then it stands to reason that season three might be the other slice of bread in this apocalyptic sandwich.

Regardless, Neil Gaiman is fully committed. “Season 3 is all planned and plotted,” he previously stated on Tumblr, “and, if I get to make it, will take the story and the characters we care about to a satisfying conclusion.”
