Remember those classic screensavers? The ones with bouncing blobs that seemed to get closer and closer to hitting the corner? Or the ones with different blobs doing the same thing? We all had our favorites.
While screensavers are still around today, they no longer serve their original purpose. They used to save our screens.
Back in the day, leaving the same image on an older CRT monitor or television for too long could result in a burned-in ghost image. Imagine waking up to a permanent display card ghosted on your screen because you left your TV on overnight.
These screensavers were designed to prevent the phosphor coating on the screen from burning in and causing permanent damage. They constantly changed what was displayed, ensuring that no image remained static for too long.
Although screensavers are no longer necessary for this purpose, many people still use them to hide what they have on their screens from prying eyes.
