One Piece Co-Showrunner Hints at Season 2, Jamie Lee Curtis Possibly Joining Cast

The live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s manga One Piece continues to captivate audiences on Netflix, securing a spot in the Top Ten most-viewed shows even weeks after its premiere. With such immense popularity, it comes as no surprise that the streaming platform has already given the green light for a second season. Co-showrunner and series writer Matt Owens, who had to remain silent due to the writers’ strike, has finally opened up about what fans can expect in season two.

In an exclusive interview with Deadline, Owens spilled some details about the thrilling conclusion of season one (which I won’t spoil here, just in case you’re not caught up yet) and also shared exciting news about the upcoming season.

“We have some incredible opportunities to bring in guest stars for certain roles, and it turns out that Jamie Lee Curtis is a devoted One Piece fan,” Owens revealed, referring to Curtis’ Instagram post expressing her desire to portray a specific character. “As soon as we heard that, we knew we had to try and get her on the show. We brainstormed and realized that Doctor Kureha, a character who plays a significant role in our story, would be a perfect fit for Jamie Lee Curtis.”

However, due to the ongoing strike involving Curtis and the rest of SAG-AFTRA, any discussions will have to be put on hold until the strike is resolved. Nevertheless, the writers’ room for season two is already buzzing with creativity, and Owens gave a tantalizing glimpse into what lies ahead:

“Without revealing too much or spoiling any surprises, I can say that a major theme we’re exploring in season two is the trials of leadership. From Luffy’s perspective, he now has his loyal crew by his side as they embark on their journey through the Grand Line. But with great power comes great responsibility, and they will face numerous challenges along the way. This theme of leadership also intertwines with other captivating storylines and characters that I won’t divulge just yet. But rest assured, the challenge of leadership will be a central focus in season two.”

For those eager to dive into the world of One Piece, the first season is now available for streaming on Netflix.
