Breaking News: Legendary comic book artist and writer Keith Giffen, known for co-creating Marvel’s Rocket Raccoon and DC’s Lobo, has sadly passed away at the age of 70.

Giffen’s passing was confirmed on his official Facebook account with a post that humorously stated, “I told them I was sick… Anything not to go to New York Comic Con. Thanx. Keith Giffen 1952-2023. Bwah ha ha ha ha.”

The news of Giffen’s death has deeply affected the comic book industry, with many industry professionals expressing their condolences on social media. Fellow writer/artist Colleen Doran shared a heartfelt tribute, describing Giffen as a dear friend who was endlessly kind, funny, and truly original.

Writer J.M. DeMatteis also paid tribute, highlighting Giffen’s immense creativity, generous collaboration, and unique personality. He referred to Giffen as a character out of one of his own stories and wished him safe travels.

Keith Giffen’s Comic Book Legacy

Giffen, born in Queens, New York on November 30, 1952, made his mark on the comic book industry in the mid-1970s. Alongside writer Bill Mantlo, he created the beloved character Rocket Raccoon for Marvel Comics, who later became a prominent figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe through the Guardians of the Galaxy films.

However, Giffen’s creative genius extended beyond Rocket Raccoon. He also co-created DC’s Lobo with writer Roger Slifer, a character who gained significant popularity and appeared in various animated DC adaptations. Lobo even made his live-action debut in the Syfy series Krypton in 2019.

Giffen’s contributions to DC Comics include notable work on titles like Legion of Super-Heroes and Justice League. He also left his mark on Marvel with titles such as Annihilation, The Defenders, Drax the Destroyer, and Thanos.

Not limited to the Big Two publishers, Giffen also made significant contributions to Image Comics, Dark Horse Comics, and Valiant Comics. Additionally, he showcased his talent in the television industry, writing episodes for shows like The Real Ghostbusters, Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi, and Ed, Edd n Eddy.
