Exciting news about The Penguin! DC’s highly anticipated spin-off series, connected to the blockbuster film The Batman, has unfortunately experienced a delay in its release date.
According to a recent article from Deadline, the premiere of Max’s The Penguin has been pushed back due to the ongoing strikes by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA).
While Max never officially announced a release date for The Penguin, Decider’s Meghan O’Keefe tweeted that the series was initially expected to debut in spring 2024. However, it is now aiming for a fall 2024 release.
The WGA strike began on May 2, 2023, and concluded on September 27, 2023. On the other hand, the SAG-AFTRA strike started on July 14, 2023, and is still ongoing. The SAG-AFTRA strike advocates for improved pay, protection against artificial intelligence, and more rights for actors. Filming for The Penguin began in March 2023 but had to be temporarily halted in June.
Who stars in DC’s The Penguin?
The Penguin takes place one week after the events of The Batman and follows Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot’s rise to power in a Gotham City submerged by water. Colin Farrell reprises his role as Penguin, which he first portrayed in The Batman. Additionally, Cristin Milioti from Palm Springs will play Sofia Falcone, the daughter of Carmine Falcone.
Joining the cast is Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni and Michael Zegen as Alberto Falcone, Carmine’s son.
During a 2024 programming showcase on November 2, 2023, HBO and Max CEO Casey Bloys shared his thoughts on The Penguin, stating, “I believe the key, even within DC, is to tell different stories in different styles, avoiding repetition. I would say that Peacemaker is tonally very distinct from The Penguin. So, there’s a diversity in storytelling, and I think that’s beneficial.”
