Angel’s Amy Acker and J. August Richards Discover Their Acting Niche

Get ready for a fascinating conversation between two stars from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off Angel! J. August Richards and Amy Acker recently sat down to discuss their TV roles and discovered something intriguing – they both have distinct patterns.

Richards, the mastermind behind the acting course “Being a Series Regular,” shared a captivating clip on X (formerly Twitter) where he and Acker delved into the patterns in their TV credits. Richards highlighted some of Acker’s most iconic roles, including the transformation of Winifred Burkle into the enigmatic character Illyria in Angel Season 5. Curious about Acker’s niche, Richards asked her to ponder while he revealed his own potential niches – “men who have to protect their families under extreme circumstances” or “good people who do bad things that you still have to root for.”

In Angel, Richards portrayed Charles Gunn, a remarkable human who fearlessly hunted vampires on the streets of Los Angeles while caring for his younger sister. He also made appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D as Mike Peterson, a.k.a. Deathlok, a devoted father turned cyborg fighter.

Acker, who also graced S.H.I.E.L.D. and showcased her talent in Fox’s 2017 X-Men series The Gifted, summed up her niche as “someone you think is one thing and turns out to be someone else.” Richards wholeheartedly agreed, exclaiming, “That is you!”

Angel, starring the incredible David Boreanaz as the vampire with a soul, captivated audiences from 1999 to 2004. The show continued Angel’s story after his departure from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, focusing on his quest for redemption by aiding the helpless. Alongside Acker’s Fred and Richards’ Gunn, Angel received assistance from beloved Buffy crossover characters Cordelia, Wesley, and Spike, as well as a host of captivating original characters.
