While the 2026 release window is exciting, the exact date remains a mystery. Star Wars enthusiasts are eager to know when they can expect to see Din Djarin and his green son light up the silver screen. Historically, most Star Wars movies have premiered in May, with the exception of the 2008 animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which debuted in August.
However, since Disney’s acquisition of Star Wars studio Lucasfilm, the franchise’s films have typically been released in December. The only exception to this trend was 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, which premiered in May.
The Mandalorian & Grogu takes the lead in Star Wars’ new movie lineup
The Mandalorian & Grogu, a spin-off of the popular Disney+ series The Mandalorian, is set five years after the events of 1983’s Return of the Jedi. The series, which premiered in 2019 and aired its third season in 2023, stars Pedro Pascal as Din “Mando” Djarin, a Mandalorian foundling and bounty hunter who becomes a father figure to the young Grogu, a former Jedi Padawan of Yoda’s species.
Jon Favreau, the creator of The Mandalorian, will write and direct the duo’s big-screen debut, marking the franchise’s first cinematic entry since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
The Mandalorian & Grogu is one of four Star Wars features currently being fast-tracked by Lucasfilm. Before the announcement of the Mandalorian spin-off, it was speculated that the first post-Rise of Skywalker movie would be a Rey Skywalker-centric film. However, this project, which sees Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey, remains a top priority for the studio.
In other news, James Mangold is working on a film set 25,000 years before the original Star Wars, while Dave Filoni is developing a movie that will conclude both The Mandalorian and its spin-off series (including The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Star Wars; Skeleton Crew).
Lucasfilm has a galaxy of Star Wars movie plans
But that’s not all! Several other Star Wars films are also in the pipeline. Taika Waititi and Shawn Levy are each developing their own unique takes on the Star Wars universe. Additionally, Donald and Stephen Glover are penning a Lando Calrissian-led movie, which was initially planned as a Disney+ series.
There are also whispers of Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson making a return to the franchise. And let’s not forget the possibility of Patty Jenkins’ long-awaited Rogue Squadron movie finally coming to fruition.
