Exciting news from Lionsgate as reported by Jeff Sneider (The Insneider), two beloved genre properties are making a comeback, including a fresh, modern spin on the cult classic American Psycho.

According to Sneider’s latest edition of The Insneider newsletter, “Lionsgate is gearing up for a new American Psycho movie and is also showing interest in a remake of The Dead Zone.”

American Psycho, the chilling story of the murderous yuppie Patrick Bateman, originated as a 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis and was later adapted into Mary Harron’s iconic 2000 movie.

Christian Bale’s unforgettable portrayal of Patrick Bateman in the hit movie continues to spark debates among fans: is Bateman truly a murderer, or merely a psychopath?

The film inspired a direct-to-video “sequel” titled American Psycho 2 in 2002, which was initially an unrelated story but was later transformed into an American Psycho sequel, featuring Mila Kunis.

On the other hand, The Dead Zone, the gripping tale of a man who wakes up from a coma with psychic abilities, was originally a 1979 novel by Stephen King. It was adapted into a 1983 movie directed by David Cronenberg with Christopher Walken as the lead character, Johnny Smith. The King novel also inspired a 2002 TV series starring Anthony Michael Hall.

As per Jeff Sneider, “Roy Lee is producing a new version that has piqued Lionsgate’s interest, given that the studio’s TV department produced the USA series that starred Anthony Michael Hall.”

Akela Cooper (known for M3GAN, Malignant, and The Nun 2) has been chosen to adapt the screenplay for a new Universal horror movie based on a short story by Colin Bannon titled Don’t Look. According to Deadline, the enigmatic new horror film will star the talented Janelle Monáe (known for Glass Onion and Antebellum).

The plot of Don’t Look is based on Colin Bannon’s unpublished short story, which leaves us in suspense as the logline for the Universal feature remains a mystery at this time.

Bannon is currently on a roll. Last month, the writer secured a deal with Universal for his horror short story Long Lost, produced by Spielberg’s Amblin Partners, Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon for Genre Pictures, Scott Glassgold, and his Ground Control Entertainment. The feature film adaptation is said to be akin to What Lies Beneath and Rosemary’s Baby, narrating the story of a newly married woman whose life takes a drastic turn when her husband’s presumed-dead wife shockingly returns, sparking fears of a sinister plan to reclaim what was once hers.

Deadline highlighted that “Bannon holds the Black List for having landed a record seven scripts on the List, and he has sold the specs Ultra to Tri-Star Pictures and First Ascent to Netflix.”

Scott Glassgold recently collaborated with Akela Cooper on the upcoming feature, It’s Over, an unpublished short story from Jack Follman that Sony Pictures has acquired. It’s Over is expected to take the painful breakup of a longtime couple and steer it into the horror genre, blending humor and social commentary, as Cooper did in M3GAN and Malignant.

Janelle Monae is in talks to both star in and produce Don’t Look through her Wondaland Pictures’ first look deal with Universal Pictures, along with Scott Glassgold’s Ground Control.

Stay tuned for more plot details to emerge soon.
