Alex Proyas, the visionary behind the 1993 cult classic The Crow, didn’t hold back his thoughts on the first look of Bill Skarsgård in the much-anticipated reboot.
Proyas took to Facebook to share an image of Skarsgård as Eric Draven, sitting across a campfire from FKA Twigs’ Shelly Webster. The original Crow director couldn’t resist poking fun at Skarsgård’s look, quipping, “Eric Draven’s having a bad hair day. Next reboot thanks,”.
Proyas didn’t stop there. In the comments section of his post, he continued his playful jabs at Skarsgård and the reboot in general. His remarks ranged from, “I guess he’s supposed to be a bad mofo with all those tats and werewolves and skulls on his jacket,” to, “Well at least the stills gave me a good laugh. I thought they were going to take a dump on Brandon Lee’s legacy for a moment.”
Delving into The Crow’s Past
Proyas’ The Crow, released in 1994, was a cinematic interpretation of the supernatural superhero from Caliber Comics, created by James O’Barr. The late Brandon Lee starred in the film, which tells the story of a rock musician who, after being left for dead alongside his fiancée, is resurrected to exact revenge on his killers. The Crow’s production was marred by tragedy when Lee was fatally injured by a prop weapon. His remaining scenes were completed using early CGI and stunt doubles. Despite the tragedy, the film was lauded for Lee’s final performance and grossed $94 million worldwide on a $23 million budget.
After a series of cast and director changes over the years, The Crow reboot finally began production with Skarsgård stepping into the title role. The film is directed by Rupert Sanders and penned by Zach Baylin and Will Schneider. The Crow also features FKA Twigs, Danny Huston, Isabella Wei, Laura Birn, Sami Bouajila, and Jordan Bolger.
Mark your calendars! The Crow is set to hit theaters on June 7.
