Just like many franchises that transitioned from 2D to 3D open worlds, Konami’s two Castlevania ventures on the Nintendo 64 didn’t exactly hit the mark. However, Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness is generally considered superior to Castlevania 64. Now, thanks to a fan’s discovery, it’s even better than before.
As reported by IGN, YouTuber JupiterClimb recently shared a video unveiling a variation of the famous Konami Code hidden in the 1999 action-platformer. Entering this code unlocks all four characters, their alternate costumes, and the game’s Hard Mode difficulty right from the start. This means you no longer need to rescue children throughout the game to unlock each character and their alternate costumes. It also addresses the criticism that Reinhardt and Carrie weren’t available from the start, unlike in Castlevania 64.
To access these bonuses, enter C-Up x4, C-Down x4, C-Left x2, C-Right x2, C-Left x2, C-Right x2, L, R, and Z in the main menu. Create a new save, and instead of only having Cornell to choose from, you’ll also have Reinhardt Schneider, Carrie Fernandez, and Henry Oldrey at your disposal.
But that’s not all. JupiterClimb has also uncovered additional codes that allow players to max out their inventory, attack power and sub-weapon, and even grant you 99 jewels. Unfortunately, these only work on the Japanese and European versions of the game, but they’re still a neat addition. JupiterClimb suggests these were likely debug codes used for game testing, which weren’t removed for the PAL and Japanese releases.
Of course, you’ll still have to grapple with the tricky camera and challenging platforming, but that’s nothing new.
On another note, if you’re craving some fresh Castlevania action, keep your eyes peeled for V Rising and its Legacy of Castlevania crossover content, launching May 8th on PC via Steam.
