Enter the Game Loop.
Trace and I found ourselves unintentionally framing our April conversations with films featuring Jude Law. We kicked off the month dissecting Matt Damon’s captivating portrayal of an Italian con artist in The Talented Mr. Ripley (listen here), and now we’re wrapping up April with a deep dive into David Cronenberg‘s mind-bending eXistenZ (1999).
Considered an unofficial sequel to Videodrome (listen here) and a precursor to Crimes of the Future, eXistenZ immerses us in a world of virtual reality and simulation. We follow the thrilling journey of game goddess Allegra Gellar (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and PR geek Ted Pikul (Jude Law) as they navigate the Canadian wilderness, evading ‘Realist’ terrorists hell-bent on ending Allegra’s life.
With a host of bizarre encounters and eccentric characters, including Willem Dafoe‘s intriguingly queer-coded Gas and Canadian film icons like Don McKellar and Sarah Polley, Allegra and Ted must traverse between reality and the game world, constantly discerning friend from foe.

Also on the agenda: critiques of a “bland” game world, applause for Jennifer Jason Leigh, a nod to Canadian royalty, comparisons to Serenity, the grotesque gristle guns, and Pikul’s multiple back-blowing experiences!
