Lord & Miller Allegedly in Intense Dispute with Sony Over Spider-Noir Series Budget

There’s a storm brewing between Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Sony, and it’s all about the budget for the much-anticipated Spider-Noir series.

Back in 2019, Lord and Miller inked a lucrative nine-figure deal with Sony Pictures Television. Their mission? To create both live-action and animated comedy and drama series, focusing on the Marvel characters that Sony holds the rights to.

One of the projects, a Silk: Spider Society series, which Lord and Miller were set to executive produce with Amy Pascal and Angela Kang, got the green light in November 2022. However, it was unexpectedly canned at Amazon in May 2024.

But there’s good news for Marvel fans. A series titled Spider-Noir is currently in the pipeline. The live-action series will feature Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man Noir, a role he first brought to life in animated form in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The star-studded cast also includes Lamorne Morris, Brendan Gleeson, Li Jun Li, and Abraham Popoola.

So, what’s the scoop on the Spider-Noir series?

A recent article by Puck reveals that there’s a major disagreement between Lord, Miller, and Sony Pictures Television over the series’ budget.

While the specifics are still under wraps, Puck also reports that Sony Pictures Television is unlikely to renew the five-year deal that Lord and Miller signed in 2019 once it expires.

Despite the controversy, Spider-Noir is currently in production. The series will follow the life of an aging, down-on-his-luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who must confront his past life as the city’s sole superhero.

Harry Bradbeer is at the helm, directing the first two episodes of the series. He also joins Lord, Miller, and Pascal as an executive producer.

Spider-Noir is set to make its debut in the United States on MGM+ before making its way to Amazon Prime Video. The official premiere date is still a mystery, so stay tuned!
