Life hasn’t been a walk in the park for the X-Men since the devastating fall of Krakoa. It’s no surprise that Kitty Pryde is yearning for a life beyond her superhero duties. Yet, as the sneak peek of Exceptional X-Men #1 shows, it’s not easy to hang up the cape.

Exceptional X-Men #1, penned by Eve L. Ewing and brought to life by Carmen Carnero, takes us to Kitty Pryde’s hometown of Chicago. She’s now a bartender, having distanced herself from her former comrades. Yet, despite her quest for a normal life, Kitty can’t ignore those in need. This leads her to save a young Mutant, whose powers are triggered following a violent encounter with a bouncer.

When Kitty first joined the X-Men, the White Queen was still part of the nefarious Hellfire Club. Even though Emma has since reformed, Kitty hasn’t forgotten their initial encounter and was slow to forgive. Their professional relationship has improved over time, but they rarely see eye to eye, except when it comes to educating the next generation of Mutants. This simmering tension is bound to ignite future drama as the Exceptional X-Men saga unfolds.
