What is Hellboy Winter Special: The Yule Cat about?
Dark Horse explained in a press release that this special one-shot draws inspiration from the tales of Jólakötturinn, the fearsome Yule Cat of Icelandic folklore. Legend has it that the Yule Cat descends from the mountains, seeking out those who haven’t received new clothes before Christmas Eve. In this comic, Hellboy embarks on a journey to Reykjavik, where children are vanishing and a colossal creature has been sighted. Could it be the infamous Yule Cat of Icelandic lore?
“Iceland, with its fire and ice, trolls and necropants, is the perfect backdrop for a Hellboy story,” said Smith, the mastermind behind the 2023 winter special. “Set in 1990, just before the events of Hellboy: Bones of Giants, Hellboy surely hasn’t forgotten the wrath of the ancient Norse giants. But a gigantic cat that devours children? That’s something entirely new.”
Mignola chimed in, praising Smith’s work. “Matt Smith is fantastic. I’ve been incredibly lucky to have him contribute to Hellboy, and I’m thrilled that he has crafted his own story. Especially a holiday tale featuring a monstrous cat! It’s like a Christmas gift for me and all the fans who adore this kind of thing. He truly excels at it.”
