Forget Tom Cruise, because Philip K. Dick’s captivating novella Minority Report is about to take the stage! Previously adapted into a film (featuring the aforementioned Cruise) and a forgettable TV series, this thrilling story is now being reimagined for the theater.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the play adaptation is being brought to life by actor-writer David Haig and will make its grand debut in the U.K. in early 2024. Guiding this exciting production will be director Max Webster.
Set in the year 2050, the adaptation will follow the journey of neuroscientist Dame Julia Anderton, who heads a special police unit that apprehends individuals before they even commit crimes. This futuristic twist adds a chillingly relevant element to the story, exploring themes of law, justice, and the incredible power of technology to predict the future.
Webster expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I’m thrilled to be directing Minority Report—a story beloved by many, but now transformed into a gripping thriller about the intersection of law, justice, and the boundless potential of technology,” as reported by THR.
Haig also shared his excitement, describing the process of crafting the play as “the most exhilarating challenge of my career: writing a futuristic thriller for the stage, based on one of the greatest sci-fi tales ever told.”
The highly anticipated opening night of the play will take place at Nottingham Playhouse on February 16, 2024, running until March 9. Following that, it will embark on two additional runs: at Birmingham Repertory Theatre from March 22 to April 6, and at London’s Lyric Hammersmith from April 19 to May 18.
