Get ready for an exciting new Toxic Avenger film that’s bound to leave you on the edge of your seat! This highly anticipated movie has already made waves at Fantastic Fest, and director Macon Blair (I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore, The Florida Project) recently spilled the beans on how he brought one particularly grotesque moment to life.
But before we dive into the juicy details, I must warn you: if you’re not a fan of hilariously disgusting imagery, you might want to stop reading now.
In a recent interview with /Film at Austin’s Fantastic Fest, Blair revealed that a scene in The Toxic Avenger was shot by the infamous “Butt Guts Unit.” This unique team was formed because Legendary, the studio behind the film, offered Blair some extra cash to add some extra “fun stuff” to the movie.
One of these fun additions involved adding a touch of gory flair to a restaurant brawl scene, where our hero Toxie (played by the incredible Peter Dinklage) takes on a group of thugs. Blair explained:
“I had this idea that Toxie would take his mop and rip this guy’s pants down. And then one of the assistant editors, Delaney, said, ‘He’s going to rip his guts out of his butt?’ And I thought, ‘Nope… yes.'”
And just like that, the Butt Guts Unit was born. With only a day to spare, they created a fake butt with a cavity in the middle, allowing them to pull out realistic-looking intestines.
Now that’s what I call cinema!
As for when you can catch The Toxic Avenger and witness the incredible work of the Butt Guts Unit in a theater near you, we’ll just have to wait for the exciting announcement.
