Prepare to get slimed! Columbia Pictures’ Ghostbusters: Afterlife brought back all the nostalgic feels, but one iconic character was missing from the reunion: Slimer. However, fear not, because Slimer is making a triumphant return in next year’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, as announced by the studio on social media.
The official Ghostbusters social media accounts shared an exciting lenticular theater display, teasing the return of Slimer and the emergence of “a new empire of spirits.” While Slimer didn’t make an appearance in Afterlife, fans will remember the ghostly figure appearing alongside a female companion in Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters remake.
Last April, director Jason Reitman explained in an interview with The A.V. Club that Slimer was absent from Afterlife due to the film’s Oklahoma setting. He stated, “Every culture has their own ghost stories, and we want to see all of them.”
In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all began – the iconic New York City firehouse. They join forces with the original Ghostbusters, who have established a top-secret research lab to take ghostbusting to the next level.
However, their mission takes a chilling turn when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, threatening to plunge the world into a second Ice Age. It’s up to the new and old Ghostbusters to protect their home and save humanity.
The upcoming sequel is directed by Gil Kenan, known for his work on films like Monster House and Poltergeist. Jason Reitman, who directed Ghostbusters: Afterlife, takes on the role of producer this time around.
The star-studded cast includes Patton Oswalt, Kumail Nanjiani, James Acaster, Emily Alyn Lind, as well as returning favorites Bill Murray, Finn Wolfhard, Ernie Hudson, Mckenna Grace, Paul Rudd, Celeste O’Connor, Logan Kim, Annie Potts, Dan Aykroyd, and Carrie Coon.
Mark your calendars! Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will hit theaters on March 29, 2024.
