Acclaimed actor Paul Dano stepped into the realm of superhero cinema with his pivotal role in the 2021 blockbuster, The Batman. In the face of the so-called “superhero fatigue,” Dano believes the genre could actually evolve and improve.
In an interview with The Independent, Dano shared his perspective on the term “superhero fatigue,” a phrase often used to express the audience’s dwindling interest in the plethora of comic book movies. Dano sees this as a golden opportunity to inject a fresh perspective into the genre.
“We’re at a fascinating juncture where everyone is asking, ‘What’s next?’ Hopefully, this will either inspire someone to rejuvenate the genre or give rise to something entirely different and not superhero-centric,” Dano opined. “I’m confident there are still some great ones on the horizon, but I think this moment of reflection is quite welcome.”
Dano’s Disdain for “Content”
Dano didn’t hold back in expressing his disdain for the overuse of the term “content,” attributing its emergence to a time when Hollywood started valuing quantity over quality, a trend he deems a “grave error.”
“The moment the term ‘content’ infiltrated our industry – be it film or TV – it signaled a shift towards quantity over quality, which I believe was a significant misstep,” Dano stated. “As a viewer and an artist, I certainly don’t need that.”
When it comes to The Batman, Dano believes the film resonated with audiences because it felt like a genuine cinematic experience, not just another predictable superhero movie.
“There’s an abundance of comic book movies that are predictably formulaic. But when I read the script for ‘The Batman,’ I knew it was a genuine piece of cinema. Every line… that’s pure Matt Reeves.”
