Once a controversial series, the original NYX painted a gritty picture of the lives of homeless teenage Mutants in Manhattan. Today, it’s best known for introducing the character X-23, or Laura Kinney, to the Marvel Comics universe. Now, as part of the From the Ashes initiative, the series is being revived, with Laura (now Wolverine) teaming up with Ms. Marvel for a fresh take on the X-Men narrative.

The new NYX, penned by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and brought to life by artist Francesco Mortarino, will follow the adventures of five teenage Mutants in New York City. The sneak peek below centers on Kamala Khan, who, in her rush to her first day of class in a dual-credit Mutant Studies program, quite literally bumps into fellow Mutant, Sophie Cuckoo of the Stepford Cuckoos.

How NYX Sets the Stage for New Challenges for Ms. Marvel
Recent developments in the Marvel Comics universe have pushed Kamala Khan to her limits. As a character with both Inhuman and Mutant genes, Ms. Marvel often feels like an outsider in both communities. On top of that, Kamala is constantly juggling school, friendships, family, and her superhero duties. Although she’s no longer a wanted fugitive, Kamala’s life is far from simple. NYX promises to introduce new friends into her life, but with them come new challenges.

In an interview with Polygon, Jackson Lanzing discussed these challenges. “Teen superhero books are unique,” Lanzing explained, “because the characters often come together not because of a major threat, but because of shared experiences or friendships. They’re more akin to teen dramas than action-packed extravaganzas.”
That said, while the characters may initially bond over academics, Lanzing assures fans that the new NYX will be packed with action. Future issues will see Laura Kinney stepping up as the new dark avenger of the New York underworld, and the introduction of a new villain, the Krakoan, who poses a threat to the Krakoan-style Mutant community in a post-Krakoan world.
