Colin Farrell Explores The Penguin’s Dark Past

During a press conference for The Penguin, Farrell delved into the depths of Oz’s psyche, shedding light on how his circumstances shaped him. The Penguin picks up a week after the events of The Batman, tracing Oz’s rise to power in Gotham’s criminal underworld.

Farrell emphasized the profound effect Oz’s “physical limitation” had on his mental state. “He was born with a physical limitation that was not just physically, but emotionally and psychologically crippling,” he explained. “He felt alienated in a way that was far from empowering. He felt oppressed by his own limitation and the societal perception of it,” added the Sugar actor. (via The Direct)

Farrell also highlighted that Oz was a victim of bullying and cruelty from almost everyone, except his mother. He clarified that he wasn’t condoning Oz’s actions, but added, “Oz certainly carries a heavy burden of pain and uncertainty from his past.”

The Academy Award-nominated actor further elaborated, “The beauty of this show is not just its cool, violent, and rock and roll vibe. It also offers a glimpse into why characters are the way they are, without necessarily justifying their actions.”

At the same press conference, Farrell hinted that “redemption” might not be in the cards for Oz. “There comes a point when you’ve crossed a line, and there’s no turning back. By the end of the show, Oz has crossed that line. He has descended into a certain psychological abyss, and that’s where he now belongs,” he stated.

The Penguin made its debut on September 19, 2024, on Disney Plus.
