Creature Commandos #1 is a peculiar gem, but not for the reasons you might think. It’s not a spin-off of the upcoming James Gunn animated series that’s set to launch the new DCU. Nor is it a celebrity vanity project, even though it’s penned by actor David Dastmalchian. What it is, in essence, is a delightfully eerie read, perfect for Halloween.
The narrative revolves around the Creature Unit, a one-of-a-kind American military squad composed of monsters. These Creature Commandos are under the supervision of General Wade Eiling, who is eager to disband the project. However, the peculiar band of “weird warriors” have proven their worth, despite the team’s high mortality rate.
This situation calls for a recruitment drive, leading newly appointed squad leader Matthew Shrieve into the field to bolster the team’s ranks. They enlist vampire Vincent Velcro and werewolf Wanda Griffith to join the Frankenstein’s Monster known as Lucky and a gorgon named Mina Rhodes. However, the squad might be set up for failure before they even start defending America, due to an unseen enemy that poses a threat to the entire Earth.
Creature Commandos comic stands on its own
David Dastmalchian skillfully brings the classic Creature Commandos comics of the 1980s into the present day. The characters are largely unchanged, with the only significant alteration being the inclusion of a female werewolf in the team. The central premise of monster soldiers saving the day remains intact, although this comic is clearly set in the present day rather than during World War II. Regrettably, this first issue spends more time setting up its concept than developing its characters.
Nonetheless, the artwork by Jesús Hervás perfectly complements the subject matter. Hervás employs a sketchy style, with lighter inks than usual. Interestingly, this creates a fascinating contrast with the colors of Alex Guimaraes. The color art serves to shade the finished art or highlight the existing pencils as much as it adds visual interest.
Those anticipating a sneak peek of the new DCU might be let down by Creature Commandos. However, fans of quality horror comics will find this book a satisfying read.
