Immerse yourself in the thrilling world of Absolute Batman, the inaugural book in the Absolute Universe. This fresh spin on the Dark Knight is a stark departure from the original, with numerous conspicuous alterations to his backstory. Absolute Wonder Woman #1, on the other hand, takes a more enigmatic, mystery-laden approach. The revamped Princess Diana may seem familiar, but her origins are starkly different from her Earth-Prime equivalent.

The story kicks off with an electrifying introduction of Absolute Wonder Woman into Man’s World, before plunging into the depths of Hell. This is where the enchantress Circe, punished for her transgressions, is banished to a desolate island. The gods further task her with overseeing Diana, the last of the Amazons, who has been cast into Hell for her sisters’ sins.

The nature of these crimes remains a mystery. However, it’s clear that the Amazons of the Absolute Universe are more proactive in defending humanity and less obedient to their gods. Despite her initial reluctance, Circe grows fond of young Diana, mentoring her in warfare and magic. This equips the Absolute Wonder Woman for her destiny: to break free from Hell, shield Earth from monstrous threats, and uncover the fate of the Amazons.
Absolute Wonder Woman retains her essence despite the transformations
At first glance, Kelly Thompson’s narrative gives birth to a radically different Wonder Woman. It’s hard to picture Diana wielding magic or being nurtured by one of her arch-nemeses. However, the changes Thompson has made are less significant than what remains unchanged. Absolute Wonder Woman embodies the same courage and sense of duty as her Earth-Prime version. She also exudes compassion, attempting to calm the beasts that menace her before resorting to violence.

Hayden Sherman and Jordie Bellaire have outdone themselves with the artwork of Absolute Wonder Woman #1. Sherman’s pencil and ink work is sharp and distinct, while Bellaire’s colors, favoring warm hues, are vibrant and captivating. Every page of this comic is a visual treat.

Absolute Wonder Woman #1 is a promising start for the Absolute Universe. It presents a unique concept while staying true to the character’s core essence. Whether DC Comics can sustain this momentum remains to be seen, but this series is off to a fantastic start.
