Superhero fiction often explores the concept of redemption, even for the vilest of villains. This is a belief that resonates deeply with Tony Stark, who, as Iron Man, strives to atone for his past misdeeds by saving lives. However, Tony is pushing this belief to its limits in the upcoming West Coast Avengers #1, where he brings a reformed Ultron into the team.

West Coast Avengers #1, penned by Gerry Duggan and illustrated by Danny Kim, plunges readers straight into the thick of the action. Despite being pursued by forces seeking to seize his company, Tony Stark doesn’t let that deter him from remotely guiding Ultron on how to tackle multiple bomb threats and fires.

Understanding the Reformed Ultron in West Coast Avengers
While villains turning a new leaf is not a novel concept in superhero comics, the West Coast Avengers #1 preview leaves readers guessing about the origins of this reformed Ultron. It begs the question: Did Tony Stark reprogram an Ultron drone? That seems a bit too risky, even for Iron Man.

A plausible explanation could be found in the Avengers Inc. limited series. Here, Ultron attempted to resurrect himself by manipulating his creator, Dr. Hank Pym. Fortunately, Pym managed to subconsciously recreate the Ultron-12 personality, leading to a reconciliation. This version, who took on the name Vic Shade, was able to inhabit the new body and rid it of all other Ultron influences.
Avengers Inc. concluded with Vic Shade still allied with Wasp. However, with Janet Van Dyne now part of the ERS squad in Avengers Assemble, it appears that team is no longer active. This could pave the way for the new Ultron to join the West Coast Avengers.
